HOW YOUR PROJECT GETS MADE
Whether a family heirloom to pass down the ages or one-of-a-kind gift for a friend, the creation of an object starts from a human need. I work with you to explore and refine your needs and ideas from a first concept to ready-to-build sketches and drawings. Together, we arrive at a pleasing and harmonious design, with just a touch of WOW, that will last a lifetime and beyond.
While I primarily work with wood, I can also bring steel, resin, and even lighting into a design. The choice of materials for your project will be informed by the world in which your new décor will live. From that inspiration, we’ll select for texture, contrast, and visual flow.
Using a combination of traditional techniques and modern tools, I mill, refine and assemble your project. During the build, I send you regular updates with pictures of the work-in-progress. You are also most welcome to visit my shop any time to take a closer look and learn.
Finally, we choose a finish to match the way your new item will be used – food-grade spirits for service ware – natural oils, shellacs and varnishes for beauty – tough polyurethanes and resins for hard-working items.
A dining table, for instance, might start with a deep soaking of tung oil to enhance the figure of the wood, layers of shellac to seal the oil, and top coats of polyurethane to create a tough-wearing surface.
Creative stains and dyes may also serve to enhance and highlight the natural tones of materials and take your item to the next level.
